Always happy to see the Goats of Poznan, and even happier to see the renovation of the Stary Rynek (Old Town Square) is finally finished!

The goats make an appearance outside the Town Hall once a day, at 12 noon, and along with the bugler provide a history and counting in Polish lesson - listen for the school children gathered to count to twelve as the goats butt heads twelve times.

Legend has it that the goats escaped the castle kitchen and made their way to the top of town hall where their head butting alerted those looking up at them to a fire in the castle, allowing it to be saved. The goats were pardoned and given a permanent memorial in the new clock tower. Every day at 12.00, you can hear the bugle play to signify the all clear for rhe lookout the bell chime twelve times, and the goats emerge to butt heads twelve times as local school children count each strike. A novel way to learn Polish numbers and a little history of this original capital of Poland!

Back to Reykjavik and a #FridgeMagnet of the iconic Hallgrímskirkja (Hallgrim's church) with the striking (a pose!) statue of Leif Erikson.
The church took over 40 years to construct and is designed to represent the elements of Iceland - basalt columns, glaciers and mountains! The statue of Leif the Lucky stands looking in the direction the Norse explorer often sailed - he was given the nickname because as he sailed into unknown territories, he was fortunate to find new products and foods, a shipwrecked crew he rescued and even the east coast of the Northern American continent...not bad for someone who didn't always land where he intended.
Hallgrímskirkja has become one of the recognisable symbols of Reykjavik, and is also conveniently located across the street from the best rye bread icecream in the city!

Puffins! We have puffins!
These fabulous little creatures were entertaining us as we bobbed around on the fjord near Stykkishólmur. Iceland is home to around 60% of the world's Atlantic puffin population (that's around 8-10 million birds!), and they can be seen between May to early September when they find land for burrowing, breeding, fishing and general puffin merriment.
When not raising pufflings (yes, that's the name for a baby puffin!) on land for 4 or so months, puffins spend the other months wave surfing out at sea. Even their colouring changes - the orange beaks turn dark and their white feathers mottle to grey, making them almost unrecognisable with the costume change.
So if you want to see these little Lundi (that's "puffin" in Icelandic) in all their sea parrot colourful activity, make sure you get to Iceland in the Summer months...but still bring a warm jacket!

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is an amazing place in Iceland for a variety of historical and geological reasons:
1. It is the site of the first Icelandic Parliament (Alþingi) in 930, the longest continually operating parliament in the world
2. Þingvellir means "assembly fields" and that is what the heads of each family across the country did as part of the establishment of the Icelandic Commonweath - met in the field among the rocks. There were temporary turf houses built during each meeting, but these are only fragments now. The buildings seen in the field over the Öxará River are the church and the Summer residence of the Icelandic Prime Minister, built near to the original parliament site.
3. You can walk between two continents at Þingvellir! This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the only place in the world where you can walk between two Continental Plates - the Eurasian tectonic pate and the North American tectonic plate. The plates shift 2.5cm apart each year, so the landscape is changing. But as the North Atlantic Rift moves, the magma underneath solidifies as it rises to fill the gap, so even though there are small tremors occasionally, there is no danger of Iceland tearing apart. And the volanoes in the area are considered extinct...but still monitored, just in case.

One of my favourite views in the world - Kirkjufell mountain and waterfalls on the Snæfellnes peninsula in Iceland. Possibly the most photographed mountain in Iceland - it has a unique and dramatic shape but has also featured in Game of Thrones and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty among many TV shows and movies - Kirkjufell is awe-inspiring in any weather.

I may or may not* have stood poised and ready for around 12 minutes to finally capture the Strokkur Geysir doing its thing while I had a #FridgeMagnet in my hand...worth it!

The word Geysir is Icelandic and is the origin of the similar word geyser in English - meaning "to go forward quickly" (geysa) and that's exactly what this gurgling hole of boiling water does. A blast of hot water that has been heated by a volcanic system under the lava dome of Laugarfjall is hurled into the air. It's usually between 6-10 minutes, but sometimes it just gurgles a little until it's ready to blast around 40m into the air. The volcano system that feeds the geothermal power hasn't been active in over 10,000 years, but it still shows its power in other ways - spitting water!

This spectacular set of waterfalls - and my favourite, because everyone needs a favourite waterfall! - spans 900 metres along the edge of a lava field in western Iceland. The water runoff makes its way through the catchment that is the lava field and into the Hvita River below, bringing minerals from the surrounding to give the water the light blue hue.
"Hraun" means lava in Icelandic, and fossar is "waterfalls", so now you've learned something AND seen something pretty!

I've seen a lot of Aurora Borealis displays over the years and never get tired of the dancing fairy lights. But the one I witnessed in my backyard in London tonight was spectacular on a whole other level! Yes, you read that right...London! A huge solar storm a few hours prior treated us to an incredible Kp9 of epic proportions. The intense colours were even visible to the naked eye! Never thought I'd see the Northern Lights in my backyard...and it was the warmest I've ever been shooting them too!
The Universe is pretty amazing.

If you recognise this bright yellow building, then you must have seen the movie at least once. This is the St Michael Church in the town of Mondsee where Maria and the Captain were married at the halfway point of the film, and although it only featured for 30 seconds it has become famous around the world.

Green fairy lights! On a recent trip to Norway, I was fortunate to once again witness the Aurora Borealis in Alta. These wandering spirits aren't this bright and visible with the naked eye.

As you can see in the first image, the camera sees them before we do. Hold the dots of the carousel below the images and scroll right to see them swirl and grow. This was over the space of about 20 minutes.

Everything you see is carved from ice, starting in November last year (weather dependent of course!) and opening in late December until last March. You can sleep on reindeer pelts (and sleeping bags) for one of the quietest and coolest sleeps ever - a constant -2C keeps it chilly!
This year celebrates 25 years of the Ice Hotel so the carvings inside are a selection of the themes from past years...so of course Thor takes pride of place!
